On September 21st, 2018, Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat and many other books, gave the first Annual Tom Regan Memorial Lecture at North Carolina State University. She’s pictured above talking about a lecture that she gave at an animal rights convention in the late 1980s. In the slide, you can see Tom Regan (on the right) at that presentation.
About 200 people showed up for the lecture, including students and members of the community. This event commemorated the work of CAF co-founder Tom Regan, who was on the philosophy faculty at NC State for over 34 years. Entitled “Animal Ethics and Contemporary Politics,” Carol’s lecture argued that animal philosophy and theory decenter the human and question and challenge white privilege, male privilege, patriarchy, xenophobia, and “American exceptionalism.” CAF Board Member and professor of philosophy Mylan Engel introduced Carol. The event was jointly sponsored by the Culture & Animals Foundation and by the NC State Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
