We are excited that there is one week to go until the Compassion Arts & Culture and Animals Festival that we are putting on with Compassion Arts. The festival is taking place in New York City on October 21 and 22.
This festival will feature an art show curated by CAF grantee Jane O’Hara, showing the work of 14 artists that looks at our complex relationship with animals. There will be the premiere of And the Hummingbird Says… a song-cycle about the late Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai, composed by Mihoko Suzuki and written by CAF co-vice president Martin Rowe. There will be a presentation by CAF grantee Jo-Anne McArthur about her photographs of captive animals in zoos and aquaria. The documentary film, Kedi, about street cats in Istanbul, will be shown, followed by a talk with CAF grantee Ayten Alkan and Yanoula Athanassakis. There will be a live performance of Sanctuary, a radio play by John Yunker, recorded for CAF grantee Our Hen House, featuring John Frusciante, Michael Harren, Eric Milano, Jasmin Singer, and Mariann Sullivan. Other events include a talk by Dale Jamieson about the life of Tom Regan, The Music of Michael Harren, a talk by Radhika Subramaniam, and a multi-arts performance collage with Ellie Sarty, Donald Vincent, and additional special guests.
