In 1985 Tom and Nancy Regan recognized that the animal advocacy movement lacked a forum for in-depth discussion and intellectual exploration of contemporary animal rights issues. Their response: the First Annual International Compassionate Living Festival.

For the past twenty-three years CAF has produced or co-produced  ICLF, which brought animal advocates together for dialogue, presentations and performances. Because of the current economic crisis, ICLF will not be held in 2009.
